Is it time to come home to yourself?
On my way to Tasmania at the start of this year, I read Siddhartha on the endless flight from Toronto to Sydney. Herman Hesse’s book is a hundred years old, and it’s the story of the eponymous hero seeking what matters, seeking a well-lived life.
Midlife, he’s called away from his spiritual path to be in the world. Love and money, ambition and status … he gains it all.
At first, he manages to hold it lightly, but in time, he loses his sense of himself. He’s got all the trappings; he’s got the gold and the silk. But you can see it’s an empty life.
And there’s a moment, a moment where Siddhartha suddenly sees that emptiness, he feels it in his bones. In that moment, he wrestles with that existential question:
Do I stay? Or do I leave, and continue the journey?
Spoiler alert: Siddhartha leaves, and finds a new way of being.
But if we are all, in our way, Siddhartha … we all get to some variation of that moment. We’re at the peak of something, and we realize that this is not the culmination of it all but the time when a new adventure awaits … if we have the courage to answer the call.
We add on, we accumulate, and then we have the opportunity to once again shed, to get back to what matters most and is essential.
We travel out, so we can return back home.
